Heat your home with an air source Heat Pump

Heat pumps are an energy efficient way to heat your home.

An air source Heat Pump transfers heat from the outside air to water. This in turn heats your rooms via radiators or underfloor heating. It can also heat water stored in a hot water cylinder for your hot water needs.

Heat Pumps are not suitable for all homes but where they are, they can reduce your carbon footprint and cut energy use, saving you money.

Can you benefit from a Heat Pump?

Air source heat pumps are suitable for many types of homes and commercial sites. They’re the most common type of heat pump, with tens of thousands of installations across the UK. In fact the UK Government has championed Heat Pumps, offering substantial grants for homeowners and stringent targets for manufacturers.

However Heat Pumps are not right for everyone, there some key things need to be considered when deciding if a heat Pump is right for you.

The most important factor in a successful Heat Pump installation is not the brand or any grants but how good your supplier is with the design and specification of your system.

How does a Heat Pump Work?

Air-source heat pumps designed for heating and hot water utilise a refrigeration cycle to transfer heat from the outside air into indoor spaces and water systems. The process comprises several stages:

Evaporation

Within the evaporator coil, a refrigerant circulates through a closed loop system. As the refrigerant evaporates, it absorbs heat from the surrounding outdoor air, even in low temperatures.

Compression

The vaporised refrigerant is then compressed by a compressor. This compression increases both its temperature and pressure significantly.

Condensation

The hot, high-pressure vapour travels to the condenser coil, where it releases heat indoors, providing warmth for heating purposes.

Expansion

Following condensation, the high-pressure liquid refrigerant passes through an expansion valve or metering device, reducing its pressure and temperature in preparation for the next cycle.

In heating mode, a reversing valve changes the direction of the refrigerant flow, enabling the heat pump to extract heat from the outside air and transfer it indoors, even in colder temperatures.

Key to evaluating the efficiency of these systems is the Coefficient of Performance (COP), which represents the ratio of heat output to the energy input required to operate the system. Air-source heat pumps typically boast higher COPs compared to traditional heating systems like boilers, particularly in moderate climates. This efficiency can translate into significant energy savings.

        Most Common Heat Pump Questions

Discover Answers to Common Questions About Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps work by absorbing heat from the outside air, even in cold weather, and transferring it into your home to provide heating. They use a refrigerant to extract heat from the air, which is then compressed to increase its temperature, and the heat generated is circulated through your home's central heating system.
