Solar PV panels work by converting sunlight into electricity through a process called the photovoltaic effect. Sunlight hits the panels, causing electrons to move and create an electric current. The electric current is then converted into usable electricity.
Key factors affecting efficiency:
More sunlight means more electricity.
Panels work best when sunlight hits them directly.
Shadows decrease efficiency & Clean panels work better.
High temperatures reduce efficiency.
Different panels have different efficiencies.
Quality of materials: Better materials mean better efficiency.
By considering and optimizing these factors, solar panels can generate more electricity efficiently. Space considerations are crucial when installing solar PV systems. On average, a system size of approximately 3.5 kWp will typically require about 20 square meters of roof area.
For optimal electrical output, an unshaded, south-facing roof is ideal. While east or west-facing roofs are still viable options, north-facing roofs are not recommended as they result in lower energy output. A system oriented toward the east or west will generate approximately 15-20% less energy compared to one facing directly south.
Shading from nearby buildings, trees, or chimneys can significantly diminish the performance of your solar PV system. It’s best to find an unshaded location for installation. However, in some cases, shading may be unavoidable. Certain solar PV systems can mitigate the impact of shading using “optimisers.” If shading isn’t an issue, the use of optimizers isn’t necessary or beneficial for generating more energy, although they do provide enhanced monitoring capabilities.
